STYLE YOUR HAIR DAILY

Tip of the week: DIY for Split ends What you will need for the mask:

~1 16oz can of coconut milk
~3 tablespoons raw honey
~2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
~3-5 tablespoons olive oil

In a mixing bowl, mix all the ingredients together with a whisk. Whisk really good! Whisk really hard! Honey is sometimes hard to blend in, so that's why you need to whisk really hard. Dampen your hair, and towel through your hair so it isn't sopping wet. Apply the hair mask to your hair, and make sure to get it all in your hair. Wait about 45 minutes to an hour, shampoo and condition your hair, let air dry, and viola! Beautiful, no damage hair. It is the ultimate hair repair.

Tip of the Week:  Coloring your hair and lightening it are not the same.

In fact, they are opposite processes. “Coloring” your hair darker, or to a different shade about the same color level, involves DEPOSITING color molecules into the hairshaft. Lightening it (“highlighting,” “blonding,” and God-forbid “frosting”) is the process of removing the melanin (color molecules) from your hair, causing it to look lighter (blonder) or if all the color molecules are removed, white/platinum.

The Right Way to Wash Your Hair (Yep, There Is One)

Look at how much shampoo you're using. Now cut that in half. You should use a quarter-size amount. “Shampoo removes all of the dirt and oil from your hair, and then it starts stripping away essential oils and lipids that prevent dryness and breakage,” says hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins. Shampoos labeled moisturizing, curl-enhancing, or color-protecting are relatively kind.

Do not vigorously massage your shampoo. That roughs up the cuticle, causing frizz, flyaways, and minuscule tangles. Rub your shampoo between your hands, gently massage the roots with your fingertips, and smooth what's left on your palms over the length.

Rinse (duh), but don't condition just yet. Give your hair a few gentle squeezes first, since “excess water dilutes your conditioner and prevents hair from soaking up moisturizing ingredients,” says Hawkins.

Now condition. Use a moisturizing or color-protecting formula (ones with argan, avocado, or grape-seed oil are especially hydrating). “Apply it generously in long, fluid motions,” says Hawkins. Wait two minutes before rinsing. It takes that long for conditioners to adhere to hair.

Water—and the chlorine and minerals in it—fade color. And hot water fades color faster. Get a filter for your showerhead or turn the temperature down when rinsing your hair and your color will look fresh longer.
